Work in progress 2009 (B.Tech)

Images of my work in the 2008 (Dip III) DUT art exhibition

About my artworks (2008 and 2009)

My work and (B.Tech) paper follows from my work from last year (Diploma III, 2008). My work from last year generally spoke of femininity. I explored post abuse and expressed aspects of how I feel as a woman now. I explored all the materials that are typically feminine. I incorporated stereotypical feminine objects such as lace and corsets in my work. I also dealt with the concept of layering. Layering from the past to the present and how the past seeps through the surface. Staining is used as a metaphor that can never be removed as a mark from the past. My work last year was mainly the use of collage, silkscreen, paper making and porcelain.

This all led me to the concept of juxtaposing beauty with ugliness. I found at the end of last year, I started to produce and find objects that created a dialog of beauty and ugliness. Although the theory of what is beautiful and what is ugly is very subjective. I am researching the juxtaposition of beauty and ugliness in my B.Tech paper, to find out my own definition of what beauty and ugliness is. This will give knowledge to my practical in terms of images.

The artists that I am writing about in my B.Tech paper are Penny Siopis, Fiona Kinsella and Leora Farber. These are the artists of whom I have seen the juxtaposition of beauty and ugliness in their works.

Playing with google images and symbolism

Today I am feeling lost and despair about my practical work so I decided to just go on the internet and research on google images. Lately I have been inspired by Hieronymus Bosch. I see the juxtaposition of beauty and ugliness in his works. I see in each of his paintings a number of symbols. When I look at his paintings I see birds, branches, eggs, feet, and ears, that I feel represent ugliness. I am researching these images on google images to add to my work. Once I have gathered all the images, I will research their meaning and symbolism. I feel, if I juxtapose images that mean something or have symbols that refer to beauty and ugliness, I feel that will add to my work.
